Terry “Scooter” Voyles
Director and chaplain of I-10 BEAT MJC. A testimony of faith, recovery, service, and purpose.
From survival to service.
Terry, also known as Scooter, describes himself as a grateful believer in Jesus Christ. His story includes struggle, addiction, isolation, recovery, faith, and a growing call to serve other people.
After years of trying to numb pain and feeling disconnected from purpose, Terry says his life began to change when he walked into Celebrate Recovery. Through accountability, step studies, faith, and service, he began facing the past honestly and discovering a different way forward.
Healing became a process.
“I’ve learned that healing is a process, not an instant moment. I’ve learned that honesty, accountability, and faith matter more than pretending to be okay.”
Terry’s testimony speaks openly about difficult periods in his life, including addiction and suicidal thoughts, while emphasizing the hope he found through Jesus Christ, recovery, accountability, and serving others.
Today, his message is centered on gratitude, purpose, and walking forward one day at a time.
Serving became part of healing.
One of the biggest changes Terry identifies in his recovery came when he began focusing on serving others instead of living only for himself.
That commitment now carries into I-10 BEAT MJC: helping people recognize human trafficking, giving organizations tools to respond, and approaching vulnerable people with dignity rather than judgment.
“Use whatever gift you have received to serve others.”
